More than 100 GOPA group staff members took part in activities offered during an initial GOPA Group Health Day held at GOPA headquarters in Bad Homburg, Germany on 24 May 2012. The Health Day, sponsored by Techniker Krankenkasse and organized by EPOS Health Management, was developed to initiate a dialogue with GOPA group employees about workplace health promotion. Mini information sessions run by health experts included topics on Nutrition Counseling, Back Strengthening, and Stress Management.
Participants in each health session were given practical advice on how to adopt best practices that can positively impact their short and long term health. "The nutritionist confirmed that the proven, long-term way to keep fit is not through well-publicised diets that come out frequently, but rather by adopting an ongoing habit of eating balanced foods in the right quantities," commented a Nutrition Counseling session participant. Stress Management can be as simple as "Taking the time to stop a moment and breathe deeply when work pressure increases throughout the day," commented another participant of the Stress Management session. Sessions included a mix of theory and practice, summed up best by one participant who said, "While I learned several new tips on each topic throughout the day, the whole event reinforced the importance of continually making the effort to keep a healthy lifestyle."
Additionally, an Eye Wellness stand offered vision tests and an eye glasses cleaning and maintenance service. Take-home brochures and healthy tools - such as calorie counter discs and fitness stretching bands - were provided at the Techniker Krankenkasse stand.
Workplace health promotion (WHP) encompasses all actions undertaken by employers, their employees, and society to improve the health and well-being of people at work. WHP means more than simply meeting the legal requirements for health and safety; it also means employers actively helping their staff improve their own general health and well-being as well as employees participating in creating a healthy workplace.
