Dr. Robert Gaertner
Managing Director
Dr. Robert Gaertner has been the Managing Director of EPOS since 1994. A cum laude medicine graduate of Catholic University of Louvain, he also holds a Masters of Public Health from John's Hopkins University. Dr. Gaertner has worked extensively in the health care sector worldwide with particular expertise in health sector reform and financing, health facilities and services, primary health care projects, project design and implementation and other health service planning and evaluation procedures.
Prior to joining EPOS, Dr. Gaertner was the Zonal Medical Officer in Nigeria with the World Health Organisation for Primary Health Care in Bauchi and Enugu (1988 – 1989), with specific emphasis on immunisation and cold chain improvement. He has also been a Coordinator for the EU, for the Improvement of Primary Health Care project in the Southern states in Nigeria.
Dr. Michael Niechzial
Managing Director
Dr. Michael Niechzial is a medical doctor, specialised in surgery, and a senior health services and hospital management expert. In addition to his position as Managing Director of EPOS Health Consultants, he is a Senior Visiting Lecturer at the University of Bayreuth’s Institute for Management in Medicine and Health Sciences. His lecture and research topics include introduction to health services monitoring and evaluation, epidemiology, and quality management in health care.
Dr. Niechzial pursued a focus on quality in health care during most of his professional career. In the position as Senior Expert and Team Leader in a hospital project in Senegal, his tasks included the development and implementation of quality management procedures including curriculum development, teaching, training, monitoring, and evaluation. As Senior Consultant and Research Assistant in the Department for Visceral and Transplantation Surgery at the Hanover Medical School, his research focus was on the evaluation of medical procedures in hospitals. This included the implementation of quality management procedures, including the identification of quality indicators, the establishment of a computer-based record system for surgical procedures, and the evaluation of performance, quality and effectiveness of specialised medical care.
